Dependence on rain-fed agriculture by smallholder farmers impacts food security in Ghana. Coupled with declining soil fertility, climate variability, extreme climatic and man-made events, such as soil degradation and floods results in low crop yield and food insecurity. The lack of information and tools for monitoring crop conditions is a major challenge for food security assessment. The development of data and information service as key component of an early warning system for sustainable agriculture is envisaged.
